21 Of The Best Social Anxiety Quotes To Motivate You

Anxiety is one of the most common mental health problems in both the UK where I live and the USA. As someone who has been prone to social anxiety, one of the most common desires when suffering from an anxious episode is to just feel understood, and not so alone.

I think anxiety can be a very isolating issue because it can often feel like you are the only one on the face of the Earth who has this problem. Very often I’d find myself asking “why can’t I just be normal?”

On top of that there is all the advice out there from those closest to us which doesn’t really mean well, after all, hearing ‘you just need to put yourself out there and have a bit more confidence, you are great’ doesn’t really help when inside I wish more than anything I could go and speak to people but I physically and mentally can’t.

To that end, I’ve compiled this little list of quotes about anxiety that are a nice mix of understanding and sympathy from other peoples experiences, along with some quotes I’ve found to be useful to both myself and others.

If you feel an episode of social anxiety incoming, or you are wanting to support someone who has anxiety then read on. These are the best social anxiety quotes I have come across, in no particular order...

1) “You wouldn’t worry so much about what others think of you if you realised how seldom they do.” - Eleanor Roosevelt

2) “Wild animals run from the dangers they actually see, and once they have escaped them worry no more. We, however, are tormented alike by what is past and what is to come. A number of our blessings do us harm, for memory brings back the agony of fear while foresight brings it on prematurely. No one confines his unhappiness to the present.” - Seneca

3) “There’s just so much going on in my mind, sometimes I can’t keep up with what’s going on around me.” - Amanda Jade Briskar on A Healthy Place

4) “I say “sorry” a lot, mostly because I feel everything is my fault.” - Unknown

5) “All this hurrying from place to place won’t bring you any relief, for you’re travelling in the company of your own emotions, followed by your troubles all the way” - Seneca

6) “If a person doesn’t know to which port they sail, no wind is favourable.”Seneca.

7) “Today I escaped anxiety. Or no, I discarded it, because it was within me, in my own perceptionsnot outside.”Marcus Aurelius.

8) "I feel as though my real personality is locked up in a box inside of me, and that box doesn't open until I'm alone. It saddens me so much that I can't find a way to show anyone that I'm actually intelligent and funny and good company." - Anonymous

9) “What upsets people is not things themselves, but their judgements about these things.”Epictetus.

10) “Make the best use of what is in your power, and take the rest as it happens” - Epictetus

11) “…meet with Triumph and Disaster, And treat those two imposters just the same” - Rudyard Kipling

12) “A crust eaten in peace is better than a banquet partaken in anxiety.” - Aesop

13) “It is very hard to explain to people who have never known serious depression or anxiety the sheer continuous intensity of it. There is no off switch.” - Matt Haig

14) “I have this problem: I isolate myself, then become upset because I’m lonely.” -Unknown

15) “I am exhausted from trying to be stronger than I feel.” -Unknown

16) “It’s sad, actually, because my anxiety keeps me from enjoying things as much as I should at this age.” -Amanda Seyfried

17) “Anxiety does not empty tomorrow of its sorrows, but only empties today of its strength.” - Charles Spurgeon

18) “I don’t think people understand how stressful it is to explain what’s going on in your head when you don’t even understand it yourself.” - Unknown

19) “People become attached to their burdens sometimes more than the burdens are attached to them.” - George Bernard Shaw

20) “I don’t think anyone could ever criticise me more severely than the way I viciously criticise myself.” - Unknown

21) “Nothing diminishes anxiety faster than action.” - Walter Anderson

    Hi Alex,

Thank you for your great post. I have suffered from anxiety at high levels for years and find it therapeutic to write down how I feel in quote form. I was wondering if you’d like to use some of my own personal quotes that are from my own experience? I’ve got quite a few here for you to look at and choose. https://projectenergise.com/anxiety-metaphors/

Let me know if you’d like to! I’d be honoured.
